Why I love Karate Kid Legends (A Review and Defense)

Image
Link to the original on Reddit Last weekend I finally got to watch  Karate Kid Legends . As someone who's loved the Karate Kid films since childhood, the Cobra Kai series since day 1, and a real life Karateka myself,  I really loved this film . I've talked about my thoughts a decent amount in some threads but I wanted to make this bigger comprehensive post with everything. Why I think this film is good and my response to common criticisms. Disclaimer , this is all my  personal opinion . Feel free to disagree, but please keep an open mind and read what I have to say first. Also, there will be  SPOILERS  from this point onward, I highly recommend watching the film before reading. This'll be divided into  5 parts , please take your time. Thank you! I. “Two Branches. One Tree.” - The Martial Arts So about a month ago, in celebration of Cobra Kai's series finale and in anticipation for this film, I made  this huge post  nerding out about martial arts h...

Karate Kid Legends and Cobra Kai

Link to Original In this blog I mostly talk about comics, mostly DC. But as in my Reddit and blogger profile, I'm also a devout Catholic, a huge Star Wars fan, a Tolkien fan, a medical student, and a Karateka. This post compiles my comments and my big post after Cobra Kai ended and in anticipation of Karate Kid Legends. Plenty about my history in there as well as me nerding out, so without further a do: Comment #1: Wow. Just, wow. The Karate Kid trilogy was a huge part of why I became a Karateka, and towards the end of High School I watched Cobra Kai since day 1. Now, while there's a lot of strong opinions here about this and other recent seasons, at the end of the day I can't help but disagree with them and love this show so much beginning to end. I always related to Daniel in the films, but even more so I related to Miguel. I'm actually about the same age as Xolo, and Miguel's story really resonated with me early on. Going from being bullied, to gaining strength, ...

The Theme of Legacy in Superman (2025) Ft. Lex Luthor's Rejection of Legacy, and Clark embracing the JSA's Legacy

This is a compilation of a series of image posts I made and my comments under them discussing my theories in shorter form. This is a follow up to my first post that I made just after the teaser trailer debuted if you have not seen it, it's here on my blog as well. Lex Luthor vs Superman Reject or Embrace Legacy? (Luthorcorp -> Lexcorp) A lot of people were confused or weren't fans of the change to Luthorcorp instead of Lexcorp, but actually Smallville did this first, but has Lex change it to Lexcorp after he takes over after his father Lionel. Relating this to the theme of legacy in this film, while Clark embraces all the legacies that make him (Smallville, the Daily Planet, Krypton, past heroes like the JSA), Lex rejects his father's legacy for his own. Their arcs are opposite to each other. In response to someone saying they preferred a rags to riches Lex who founded the company himself: Oh that's my personal preference too. It's what basically all the main c...

Superman and All Might: Symbol of Hope vs Symbol of Peace

I. Introduction “Is [character] from [Manga/Anime] a better Superman than Superman?” This is a conversation common with those of us into both western comic books and Japanese Manga. I’ve had them with friends in person and strangers online. I can talk about more famous comparisons with Goku from Dragon Ball and Saitama from One Punch Man, or bring up rarely cited parallels with characters like Naruto (my favorite Manga/Anime character). But here I'll discuss All Might from My Hero Academia . Why him specifically? It's obvious that Superman doesn’t want to be the very best that no one ever was. He doesn’t want to win tournaments to prove he’s the best fighter, he didn’t become a hero as a fun hobby to challenge him and he doesn’t want to become the hero mayor of the Hidden Smallvillage to gain the people’s approval. But a lot of people do think he plays the same role and represents the same things as All Might, and some believe that All Might surpasses him in that. Which is what...
